The Larkfield Priory Hotel

The Larkfield Priory a Brief History

Larkfield is an ancient hamlet originally called "Labroschesfel Hundret", part of which belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The hotel was built in the mid-nineteenth century on a parcel of land known as Larkfield farm. It was the home of the Reverend William Lewis Wigan and his family, who remained there until 1933 after his death in 1876. The original Larkfield House was totally destroyed by fire in 1890, but rebuilt to what it is today. The property has changed hands many times over the years since then, and extended to become the Larkfield Priory Hotel. It is believed that there is a ghost in the hotel, identified as Charlotte, a servant girl, and this has created much interest in the history of the locality!

Charlotte's brief but tragic story. Charlotte was a hard working servant girl who served the Reverend William Lewis Wigan and his family at the family home (Larkfiled Priory). Charlotte fell deeply in love with Grounds Keeper and after a long courtship fell pregnant before getting married. Something frowned upon in those days. After much anguish, stress and shame Charlotte lost her un-born child. As a result of her loss the Grounds Keeper refused to have any more to do with her. Charlotte entered into a deep depression of shame and guilt. After a short Blue Cedar Hotel Grouptime Charlotte took her own life by hanging. The location to this day is still unknown within the house but strange happenings occur at table five in The Refectory Restaurant!
